expo light

Milan, 2006
Today, Milan won the right to host the Expo 2015 world fair, beating out the Turkish city of Izmir. The Paris-based International Exhibitions Bureau chose Italy's Milan over Izmir in a secret ballot of its 140 members. Two candidate cities, Izmir and Milan, competed to host the event, which is cited as the third largest event in the world in terms of economic and cultural impact, after the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games.

So, Monoblog, Milan will spend a lot of money to build stadia and hotdog stands. Tourists will overrun the city. Everyone will speak English for the duration of the event.

Somehow, I'm not sorry this won't happen to Izmir. I'd rather visit Izmir. I'll try to get there before 2015.

I wouldn't dream of coming to Turkey without doing so!
