I've seen it on Crete as well, but not in the rest of Europe. Seems a bit crazy to me.

Street signs with bullet holes in the U.S are fairly common in the rural landscape.
You could almost dedicate an entire blog to it.

Probably sign vandalism is a serious problem in the world, especially on lower volume roads. Signs are shot at, run over,
painted and removed...

Eric S. is correct--not so much in areas where (dare I say it) people have something to do. But yes, it happens in the rural areas (like where I came from).
